The TSA does not have any policies prohibiting them from being brought onboard an aircraft; however, many airlines prohibit their use onboard as not being an approved electronic device. (As an example, I’ve linked American Airlines’ policy, which prohibits their use inflight for this reason.)

You should contact the airline you’re flying directly to see what their specific policy is with regard to actually using it while in flight, but they won’t stop you from bringing it on the plane even if they don’t allow it to be used.

EDIT: The second answer is not accurate — while smoking of traditional items is, indeed, prohibited, neither the TSA nor the FAA have policies or regulations prohibiting the usage of these electronic devices onboard. (Note the second link below from the TSA, which specifically states that their usage onboard an aircraft is specifically up to the carrier, not the government.)

Federal Law forbids the use of tobacco in commercial aircraft. No pipes, cigars, cigarettes or electronic cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes still spew smoke of some kind.. hence I don’t think they are allowed.

The ability to use e-cigs on airlines varies from airline to airline. It’s always best to call and ask, but from what I’ve heard, if a decision hasn’t been made by the actual airline, it will be the stewardess who determines whether they will allow you to use it or not.

Many e-cig users simply choose to go to the restroom on a plane and vape while they’re in there. Because it leaves no smell and creates no smoke, no one is any wiser about it’s use. I haven’t heard of anyone’s e-cig being confiscated during the search period, but it’s always possible.
